Find the Right Chandelier Bulb
Light is one of the most important design elements of a room and a chandelier is a great way to add a visually stunning focal point and also to add to the overall light. When purchasing a chandelier there are two bulb types to consider. In each bulb type there are a variety of designs and even light shades.
Incandescent:
Incandescent light bulbs are one of the most popular options. Simply put, an electric current passes through a thin filament, heating it which produces the light. Incandescent bulbs are made in a variety of voltages which is usually classified according to the electrical power that is consumed, measured in watts.
These bulbs are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. For a decorative application, like a chandelier, common incandescent options are candelabra, twisted candle and bent-tip candle, all based upon the traditional design of using the bulb to mimic flame. Other decorative options include fancy round and globe. Other options include clear or frosted bulbs with a specific color.
Fluorescent:
Compact fluorescent light bulbs (or CFLs) are replacing incandescent lights in many applications because they provide more visible light for the same amount or less electrical energy input. CFLs are designed to fit in all existing and new light fixtures which previously were used only for incandescent.
CFLs use less power and have a longer rated life, but are typically cost more at the time of purchase. The average CFL lasts 8 to 15 times longer than incandescent, which could make a difference if it’s a challenge to change your chandelier lights due to its height, weight or location.
Another difference between incandescent and CFLs is the immediate applications of voltage. CFLs take a perceptible amount of time to achieve full brightness. Although some CFLs are labeled for dimming, most will not function this way which makes incandescent lights more functional.
