Home Lighting Design Ideas For The Home
The lighting inside your home is meant to illuminate—but it can also inspire. One way of doing this is to coordinate the lighting in your home.
Four different areas within your home that could benefit from coordinated lighting are:
- Bathroom
- Kitchen
- Great room
- Outdoors
Bathroom
Vanity lights might be enough to brighten your bathroom. If not, a ceiling light can be a primary light source, with the vanity lights as a secondary source. Some bathroom ventilation fans also come with a built-in light that’s equivalent to a ceiling fixture.
Another option is a beauty wrap. This features a series of vanity lights above the bathroom mirror, as well as a hanging light on either side of the mirror for a full and evenly distributed light for a flattering glow.

Beauty wraps, like this from Kichler's Meredith collection, offer coordinated (and flattering!) lighting above the mirror and to each side.
Kitchen
Ceiling fixtures can be the primary light source here. Under-cabinet lighting is a fantastic way to provide supplemental lighting, as well as task-oriented lighting right at the counter.
Track lighting can present your kitchen lighting in a unique and versatile way. Tracks are bendable, the lights themselves can be adjusted and the entire track lighting system can be totally customizable.

A group of coordinated lighting, like the Manor collection from Maxim, can tie in different areas of a busy kitchen, giving it a harmonious feel.
Great room
A ceiling fixture (like a chandelier or flushmount ceiling fixture) can be your powerful main light source. While we’re at the ceiling, consider a ceiling fan with an integrated light.
If you need a complementary source of light, a table lamp or floor lamp should do the trick, depending on your room’s configuration.

A room you spend a lot of time in (like a great room, living room or family room) should have ample lighting everywhere.
Outdoors
OK, technically this isn’t inside your home, but it’s still part of it, so it qualifies. At the front door, an outdoor wall sconce can welcome your guests, while an outdoor pendant provides a broad, powerful light source. Both will add security and curb appeal.
There’s a good chance you’ll spend more time out on the back patio than on the front porch, so stir up those creative design juices a little more. Again, outdoor wall sconces are designed to provide the perfect light at a home’s entrance/exit point. If you have a covered patio, an outdoor pendant will surely do the trick. Also, consider an outdoor chandelier to bring a touch of artistry or an outdoor ceiling fan with an integrated light.

Outdoor lighting can be coordinated. The Santa Barbara collection from Maxim ties in a few different parts of this patio. Nice.
Whether it’s indoors or outdoors, lighting is practically a must-have for the home. So, coordinate your lighting to maximize its design and functional potential.
Until next time, Happy Home Improving!
