Kitchen and Bathroom Faucet Buying Guide

Searching for just the right kitchen faucet or bathroom faucet opens up a host of options: spout height and reach, finish, brand and material. But your most important choice might be the number of handles.

Differentiating between one or two handles goes deeper than just the obvious. It can dictate (or be dictated by) water and temperature control, hole options, configuration, and handle options.

Control
A single-handle faucet offers superior flow and temperature control, while you typically see a wider range of styles and spout designs with double-handle faucets.

Hole options
Single-handle faucets are installed exclusively in sinks or countertops with one-hole, and double-handle faucets require two or three holes for installation. This doesn’t include additional holes you might need for accessories like a sidespray or soap dispenser.

Some kitchen and bathroom single-handle fixtures include an escutcheon plate, which might or might not be optional, to cover up any additional holes.

Configuration
The term “configuration” refers to the measurement between the center of the holes for the faucet holes. Obviously, we can exclude single-handle faucets for this, but a two-hole sink usually accommodates a four-inch centerset faucet.

For more configuration options, consider a three-hole faucet:

  • Centerset: 4-inch configuration
  • Mini-widespread: 4- to 8-inch configuration
  • Widespread: 8- to 16-inch configuration

Handle options

Single-handle faucets basically provide one option. But you’re not always stuck with one type of handle for double-handle kitchen and bathroom faucets.

Some manufacturers give you multiple handle style options, including lever, cross and knob, as well as handle materials, including metal, ceramic, acrylic and porcelain.

That’s about it when it comes to differences between single- and double-handle kitchen and bathroom faucets. There are pros and cons to both, so the choice ultimately comes down to you.
