How To: Repair Drywall Holes

Milan from our Media Team deals with a couple of knuckleheads making holes in his drywall. Follow along as he shows you the simple steps to making a clean and paint-able repair to drywall, whether you have a large or small hole.

Filling a small hole in drywall:
Materials needed:

  • Drywall tape
  • Sanding block
  • Spackling or joint compound
  • Putty knife

Repairing a large hole in drywall:
Materials needed:

  • Utility knife
  • Drywall tape
  • Drywall screws
  • Taping knives (14″ and/or 3″)
  • Screwdriver or electric drill
  • Scrap wood (preferably 1″x 1″)
  • Sanding block
  • Quick set joint compound
  • Carpenter’s square and measuring tape
  • Pencil

If your home is older and was built with plaster walls, you have a bit more work ahead of you, but not so much that you need to hire a professional in all cases.
